Mader is a freelance writer, editor, and journalist who specializes in environmental and criminal justice issues. She was raised on a Central Texas cattle ranch and eventually made her way to Austin. After receiving her bachelor’s in journalism from the University of Texas, she spent a year exploring and writing about Central America and then worked as a staff editor for various Austin-based publications, covering topics like the federal monopoly on medicinal cannabis and the need for attorneys in rural Texas. Her recent work has appeared in the Texas Observer, Austin American-Statesman, Austin Chronicle, Texas Co-op Power Magazine, Texas Bar Journal, Edible Austin, and more. She lives in Austin with her banjo-playing husband, tractor-obsessed toddler, Tom Cat Stevens, Happy the rescue dog from Costa Rica, and Fancy the weenie dog who survived a rattlesnake bite to the face.
